The main statement of the essay is that it is not important where a person learned and got the professional skills, it is important what and how one can do t he job. I absolutely agree with this position. As we can see today, majority of students concentrates not on the quality of knowledge and professional skills they can learn, but on the presence of the diploma and the popularity of the school or university. Murray suggests the concept of challenges the basic elements on the higher education and indicates that those ideas should be supported by Obama. Thus, Murray says, ââ¬Å"As president, Mr. Obama should use his bully pulpit to undermine the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree as job qualificationâ⬠(Murray, 2008). However, although the author proposes the concrete reform, he emphasizes the benefits of the vocational trainings and test which could improve the level of specific knowledge that a worker may need. I disagree that such vocational courses can be more helpful than a full specific education or an additional degree. However, the position of bachelorââ¬â¢s degree as the only one key element of getting a job needs to be improved . Murray claims that the standards of materials used in the process of getting the degree is high and require the special abilities of the students. If some of the students are unable to deal with the college and university sources, it does not mean that they do not have the appropriate professional skills and knowledge.Advertising Looking for critical writing on american literature? Although they prefer to get more knowledge and skills from university, at the same time, they ââ¬Å"treat college as vocational training, not as a leisurely journey to well-roundednessâ⬠(Murray, 2008). From my point of view, it is incorrect to suppose that all students consider studying at university as the leisure. Moreover, in the other paragraph the author claims that the level of materials in university can be too high and complicated for a number of people. Therefore, I think that such statement is confusing. Although Murray supposes that his essay can be considered as elitist or pessimistic, I think that those two characteristics are absent. His attitude is absolutely well-grounded and valid. As a realist, the author notices the present problems within the current educational system and claims for their solving. However, as he wants to improve the situation, some specific ideas and possible variants reforms could be appropriate as well. Writing about discharge of the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree as a job qualification, Murray indicates the certification tests as a possible solution. According to Murray, such tests ââ¬Å"would provide evidence that the applicant has acquired the skills the employer needsâ⬠(Murray, 2008). Analyzing this idea, I think that this idea is worth to be considered by government. As the result, many young people will be able to p rove their capability to work, skills and competitiveness comparing with those who have the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. Of course, this statement is valid. However, at the same time the author says that ââ¬Å"certification tests would not eliminate the role of innate ability ââ¬â the most gifted applicants would still have an edge ââ¬â but they would strip away much of the unwarranted halo effect that goes with a degree from a prestigious universityâ⬠(Murray, 2008). Therefore, such measure will not solve the whole problem. But, the author does not suggest other ideas of solution. It seems that Murray only indicates the problem for the government and for President Obama particularly. I think that he should explore this question deeper and elaborate the exact ideas of what reforms could be more effective and why. In the present form, the essay Should the Obama Generation Drop Out gives an answer ââ¬â yes, but it does not give the practical answers.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Analysis of Essay Should the Obama Generation Drop Out? by Charles Murray specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Emphasizing the value of professional skills and their domination over the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree, Murray suggests President Obama to use his authority to change the current situation. The bachelorââ¬â¢s degree should not be a key aspect of acceptance or rejection of an employee. Every person should be treated according to oneââ¬â¢s professional skills and do not be judged due to the absence of the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. Although I agree with the main statement, the present essay can be considered as more emotional that informative. The author discusses inability of many students to deal with college-level material instead of suggesting the concrete solutions and adequate reforms of the educational system. Portugals Global Empire
Portugal's Global Empire Portugal is a small Western European country located at the western tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Beginning in the 1400s, the Portuguese, led by famous explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco de Gama and financed by the great Prince Henry the Navigator, sailed to, explored, and settled in South America, Africa, and Asia. Portugals empire, which survived for more than six centuries, was the first of the great European global empires. Its former possessions are now located in across 50 countries around the world. The Portuguese created colonies for numerous reasons: to trade for spices, gold, agricultural products, and other resources; to create more markets for Portuguese goods; to spread Catholicism; to civilize the natives of these distant places. Portugals colonies brought great wealth to this small country. The empire gradually declined, as it did for other colonizers because Portugal did not have enough people or resources to maintain so many overseas territories. Here are the most important former Portuguese possessions. Brazil Brazilà was by far Portugals largest colony by area and population and was reached by the Portuguese in 1500. Due to theà Treaty of Tordesillas, signed with Spain in 1494 and agreeing which nation could colonize where Portugal was allowed to claim Brazil. The Portuguese imported African slaves and forced them to grow sugar, tobacco, cotton, coffee, and other cash crops. The Portuguese also extracted brazilwood from the rainforest, which was used to dye European textiles; they also helped to explore and settle the vast interior of Brazil. In the 19th century, the royal court of Portugal lived in and governed both Portugal and Brazil from Rio de Janeiro. Brazil gained independence from Portugal in 1822. Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau In the 1500s, Portugal colonized the present-day west African country of Guinea-Bissau and the two southern African countries of Angola and Mozambique.à The Portuguese enslaved many people from these countries and sent them to the New World. Gold and diamonds were also extracted from these colonies. In the 20th century, Portugal was under international pressure to release its colonies, but Portugals dictator, Antonio Salazar, refused to decolonize. Several independence movements in these three African countries erupted into the Portuguese Colonial War of the 1960s and 1970s, which killed tens of thousands and was associated with communism and the Cold War. In 1974, a military coup in Portugal forced Salazar out of power, and the new government of Portugal ended the unpopular, very expensive war. Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau gained independence in 1975. All three countries were underdeveloped, and civil wars in the decades after independence took millions of lives. More than a million refugees from these three countries emigrated to Portugal after independence and strained the Portuguese economy. Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe, two small archipelagos located off the western coast of Africa, were also colonized by the Portuguese. They were uninhabited before the Portuguese arrived and were important in the slave trade. They both achieved independence from Portugal in 1975. Goa, India In the 1500s, the Portuguese colonized the western Indian region of Goa. Goa, located on the Arabian Sea, was an important port in spice-rich India. In 1961, India annexed Goa from the Portuguese and it became an Indian state. Goa has many Catholic adherents in primarily Hindu India. East Timor The Portuguese also colonized the eastern half of the island of Timor in the 16th century. In 1975, East Timor declared independence from Portugal, but the island was invaded and annexed by Indonesia. East Timor became independent in 2002. Macau In the 16th century, the Portuguese colonized Macau, located on the South China Sea. Macau served as an important Southeast Asian trading port. The Portuguese empire ended when Portugal handed over control of Macau to China in 1999. The Portuguese Language Today Portuguese, a Romance language, is spoken by 260 million people, with between 215 and 220 native speakers. It is the sixth most spoken language in the world. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor. It is also spoken in Macau and Goa. It is one of the official languages of the European Union, the African Union, and the Organization of American States. Brazil, with more than 207 million people (July 2017 estimate), is the most populated Portuguese-speaking country in the world. Portuguese is also spoken in the Azores Islands and the Madeira Islands, two archipelagos that still belong to Portugal. The Historic Portuguese Empire The Portuguese excelled in exploration and trade for centuries. The countrys former colonies, spread across continents, have varying areas, populations, geographies, histories, and cultures. The Portuguese tremendously affected their colonies politically, economically, and socially. The empire has been criticized for being exploitative, neglectful, and racist. Some colonies still suffer from high poverty and instability, but their valuable natural resources, combined with current diplomatic relations with and assistance from Portugal, may improve the living conditions of these numerous countries. The Portuguese language will always be an important connector of these countries and a reminder of how vast and significant the Portuguese empire once was.

New Business Idea Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
New Business Idea - Essay Example Consequently, I am thinking of developing an application linked with groceries appraisal, or cooking receipts with what you have in your fridge which will be a new innovative idea for the success of the business. The application would be easy to access and would provide assistance regarding the food preparation for every individual from kids to adults. It is observed that people get frustrated if they are supposed to have the same food on a daily basis. Moreover, it is frustrating for the people to think what to cook so that people enjoy the food at the dinner. The application linked with the food will be simple and easy to access for every individual having the smartphones. This application will be useful as after the long day of hard work people might not be in a mood to cook food as per the preference of every individual. This application would be one of the effective methods in solving the issue for that you will simply have to open the fridge to comprehend the availability at ho me and input the ingredients that you can see in the app page. After the inputs are made the application within a few seconds will prompt the best options available that can be prepared by the individual. Besides, a small description will be displayed through the app regarding the preparation of the food so that it will be easier for the people to cook their food. The app will showcase the nutritional value of the food so that the individual is aware of the fact that how much calorie a person is going to intake.

Norms Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Norms - Essay Example However, these norms are different from ethical norms because such things as workersââ¬â¢ compensation are part of contract and managers are penalized if they donââ¬â¢t comply with them. However, most of the ethical values are not stipulated in any contract and managers have to be totally answerable to their own conscience. There is no obligation on them. Response to class mate 1: After thoroughly reviewing your response to the question asked, I have reached the conclusion that your response is totally off the track! In the first half of your response, when you insist that workers should learn the norms and traditions of every culture they move into for the purpose of work so that they may not offend the indigenous people of new cultures, and do their job smoothly, you fundamentally talk about ethics. This is what the teachings of ethics are. But this was not the requirement of the question. In the question, you were asked to compare Ethics to other subjects and identify ethica l shades in subjects other than Ethics.

Sarah Palin Essay Example for Free
Sarah Palin Essay John McCain, the Republican Presidential candidate, recently announced his choice for running mate as Sarah Palin, little-known Governor of Alaska, Since this announcement, dialogue in the media, between aisles in the supermarket, and around the dinner table has been abuzz. ââ¬Å"How can she do it? â⬠they ask. Palin is a mother of five beautiful children, including her youngest who was born with Down syndrome. It was recently announced that Palinââ¬â¢s oldest daughter Bristol, 17, is five months pregnant herself. Many people in the public believe Palinââ¬â¢s daughterââ¬â¢s pregnancy casts a negative light on this candidateââ¬â¢s skills as a mother. Others argue that her childââ¬â¢s actions or disabilities have nothing to do with her ability to serve our country well. Sarah Palinââ¬â¢s entry into this already crazed election brings back the long debated question of whether or not itââ¬â¢s truly possible to ââ¬Å"have it all. â⬠Iââ¬â¢ve been surprised that women are so drastically divided on this topic. My expectations were that women would support a female candidate and communicate empathy for her challenges and ability to balance motherhood and a career. Instead, Sarah Palin has been the target of numerous harsh, and even abusive, media reports and expressions of public opinion. As a mother and another female professional working to further my career, I can relate to Sarah Palinââ¬â¢s struggle and the stigma she faces in our society. It may seem as though the United States has adopted a mindset of gender equality, but even a self-labeled feminist was quoted by the Boston Globe to say, ââ¬Å"I dont really understand how she can be governorà with all those kids to deal with, never mind Vice President of the country! My research revealed Sarah Palinââ¬â¢s husband works part-time and is able to dedicate much of his time to raising the children. If we donââ¬â¢t believe a politician can be an effective leader and a good parent, then why donââ¬â¢t we question the family roles of all the men that have occupied these offices for centuries? Sarah Palin has already proven her ability to balance remarkable responsibilities during her role as Governor. An article titled ââ¬Å"Questions for a Superhuman Momâ⬠claims Palin breastfeeds her son during meetings and has even fired a chef appointed to the Governorââ¬â¢s mansion so she could cook her familyââ¬â¢s food. I consider these actions evidence that Palin has already shown creativity and dedication to meet the challenging demands of both her family and her job. The criticism Palin and her family have received following the announcement that her daughter is pregnant is both unfair and wrong. While Bristol will undoubtedly need the support of her family to raise her child as a young mother, isnââ¬â¢t that an ideal circumstance for any young parent? Even if Bristolââ¬â¢s teenage pregnancy is viewed as a mistake, I donââ¬â¢t believe that reflects on the leadership potential of her mother. The fact that her mother has apparently accepted this reality and chose to announce it with dignity, surely anticipating harsh criticism, indicates this candidate is honest, straightforward, and willing to stand behind what she believes in despite potential backlash. It should also be noted that we do not know this young woman or any of the circumstances that surround her pregnancy. According to many of the same media reports that unfairly portray Sarah Palin, Bristol plans to marry her unborn babyââ¬â¢s father and the two have been dating for nearly a year. Teenage love might be peak our interest as news consumers, but what does it really have to do with the role of a leader? Like other women, I can relate to Sarah Palin. None of our families are perfect, but she loves and accepts each of her children with pride. During the Republican National Convention, Palin addressed the nation and introduced her family. After a captivating speech, she was joined by all of her children and her husband. Many political figures might have opted to leave their children or entire family out of the spotlight in light of that dayââ¬â¢s controversial media coverage on Bristolââ¬â¢s pregnancy. Critics have a point that little is known about Palinââ¬â¢s stance on several noteworthy issues, but she should be given time to communicate her plans and provide evidence of her performance. So many of Palinââ¬â¢s personal decisions have been picked apart by the media, but few people have taken the leap to extrapolate her parental decisions as a positive sign for her appointment to Vice President. Palin is willing to send her own son off to war. She made the unusual decision to continue a pregnancy knowing her child would have a disability because she believed she and her husband could meet the challenge. Sheââ¬â¢s been a member of her childrenââ¬â¢s schoolââ¬â¢s PTA for longer than sheââ¬â¢s been in office and sheââ¬â¢s dedicated her scarce time and energy to improving schools. If itââ¬â¢s acceptable to criticize Sarah Palin for her personal life, I think itââ¬â¢s only fair to consider her strength as a well-organized and dedicated mother as a sign that she should also be given a chance to continue proving herself as a leader. Whether or not I choose to vote for McCain and Palin has nothing to do with my admiration her acceptance as this countryââ¬â¢s first female Vice-Presidential candidate. Sheââ¬â¢s already proven there are many different kinds of feminists, mothers, and leaders. Before the media latched onto the finding that Bristol Palin is pregnant, much discussion swirled around the fact Sarah Palinââ¬â¢s youngest son, Trig, has Down syndrome. Sarah Palin and her husband have graciously shared their personal reaction to their sonââ¬â¢s prenatal diagnosis and provided their pro-life beliefs as explanation for why they made a different decision than 80% of parents given the same news. Trigââ¬â¢s cognitive disability will offer new challenges for the Palin family, but by all accounts they have the financial resources and willingness to meet his needs and nourish his development into a happy, healthy young citizen. Mothers of children with Down syndrome are divided in their support of Sarah Palin, but many are eager for a public official to so closely understand their struggles with education, housing, healthcare, and equal rights for people with disabilities. I agree with mothers of other children with Down syndrome who feel like many in the media are being unfair to label their children as burdens making it impossible for one to parent and lead a balanced life. One mother of a five year old child with Down syndrome has been quoted in the Boston Globe to say, ââ¬Å"If she has support, the sky is the limit. While I disagree that Palin canââ¬â¢t be or shouldnââ¬â¢t be a political leader because sheââ¬â¢s a mother, my life experience tells me she will need support. If elected, any and all additional supports she and her husband might need would be available in Washington DC. Sheââ¬â¢s been able to manage four children for several years in a number of leadership positions, but perhaps the harsh critics are right. Maybe with the addition of a child with Down syndrome and the pregnancy of her young daughter, Sarah Palin will need reinforcements to provide what her family needs. Is that such a horrible possibility? It seems odd that many members of the Democratic party profess whole-hearted agreement with the quote, ââ¬Å"It takes a village to raise a child. â⬠Yet if Sarah Palin suggested she or her family might benefit from support, it would be viewed as an utter failure of her ability to ââ¬Å"have it all. â⬠I hope Americans realize that thereââ¬â¢s no harm in supporting each other and accepting the fact that there are many different ways to lovingly raise children. Many single mothers expect to be treated as equal professionals. Itââ¬â¢s a dangerous accusation to make that even with support a woman canââ¬â¢t simultaneously function well as a leader and a parent. Iââ¬â¢m still educating myself about the views of Palin and all the candidates, but our shared experiences make her a political and public figure that I can relate to in several ways. If anything, her addition to this election makes it more interesting to me and perhaps a more important turning point for our country.

Breast Cancer Essay -- Diseases Medical Medicine Essays
Breast Cancer Chromosome 17 and BRCA1 Among the most common diseases affecting the female population, breast cancer develops in one of every eight American women. This means that almost 200,000 women suffer from the disease each year. Doctors would advise women to take necessary precautions, such as routine surveillance, in order to ensure a life without obtaining this disease prior to understanding any genetic linkage of breast cancer. Although many external factors contribute to breast cancer, current investigations reveal that five to ten percent of these cases may be attributed to genetic inheritance (Lynch, 1999). This knowledge, an ingenious finding by Mary-Claire King in 1990, linked breast cancer to the long-arm of chromosome 17 (Biesecker, 1997). Since the discovery of possible genetic linkage, doctors have been able to delineate those individuals who are most prone to the disorder, and immediately, these women begin to act in accordance with doctorââ¬â¢s suggestions to reduce their risk (Rosenthal et. al., 1 999). Mary-Claire King not only determined that breast cancer was a genetic disorder, her findings also suggest that the mutation of gene BRCA1 (Breast Cancer one) is responsible for most inherited breast cancer. Further investigations pointed to another gene, BRCA2, as also contributing to genetic inheritance. Unlike BRCA1, BRCA2 is found on chromosome 13. Researchers have found that 90% of all inherited cases of breast cancer may be due to mutations of these individual genes (Lynch et. al., 1999). The BRCA1 gene has the locus designation, 17q21, and is responsible for this autosomal dominant syndrome (Merajver et. al., 1995). History of the Ku Kus Klan
The history of mankind is a history of ââ¬Å"repeated injuries and usurpationsâ⬠on the part of man toward man. In the documents I have asked you to read, the universal rights of the individualââ¬âman, woman, and childââ¬âare addressed or the question of injustice to a particular group is central. The United Nation writes about the tyranny of one nation over another, while setting forth the rights of man; Mrs. Stanton delineates women's grievances and calls for equal rights for women; in a rich and deep idiom, Sojourner Truth echoes Mrs.Stanton's pleas for justice for all women (black and white; rich and poor; scholar and laborer); Dr. King addresses the oppression of Blacks in the U. S. and calls upon all eople who care about human dignity and human rights to respond; in contrast, Hitler argues for the natural superiority of the Aryan raceââ¬âhis racial theory, though deeply flawed, led to the slaughter of six million peple in the Nazi death camps; the United Natio ns' manifesto is considered the seminal modern document on universal human rights and its Convention on the Rights of the Child ââ¬Å"proclained that childhood is entitled to special care and assistance. The Geneva Accords which set out to establish the treatment of soldiers eventually found it necessary also to lay down rules for the conquered peoples. Everywhere we look today (Haiti, Cuba, Somalia, Sudan, China, Iraq, and other nations singled out for human rights violationsââ¬âman's inhumanity to man and new theories of ââ¬Å"racial cleansingâ⬠lead to the mutilation of man's mind and spirit and to racial and ethnic genocide. Our country does not escape censure. The abuse at Abu Grahib, Amnesty International's recent report that female prisoners are often sold as sex slaves to male inmates in our prisons, the controversies over building a mosque not only at Ground Zero which is an extremely sensitive issue but also in Oklahoma and other places across the nation, and the new immigration laws in Arizona, show that America is failing to uphold human rights and the dignity of the individual both abroad and at home.Your assignment is to write a research paper in which you investigate an injustice that has been perpetrated against an individual or a group here in the United States in the twentieth century. You can drw from past history, such as the shameful treatment of the Bonus Army by the government in 1932, or from current headlines. Requirements: 0. The text of the paper must be 5 typed pages. This means that the body of the paper is approximately 1,500 words. In addition, there is to be a ââ¬Å"Works Citedâ⬠page. 0. There is to be a minimum of five sources used. Of these, 4 must be books and 1 may be a scholarly article drawn from an academic database. Internet sources should not be consulted as in most cases it is impossible to check their accuracy. The homepage of specific fringe organizations (such as the Ku Klux Klan) can be used. 0. You must use at least 1 primary source. The paper must use correct MLA format and documentation style.
